Positive press builds trust in a way ads can’t. When a newspaper or news site features your brand, customers see it as credible. The good news is you don’t need a huge budget to earn that coverage. You need a clear story and a smart approach.
1. Find your story angle
Journalists don’t cover “we’re a great company.” They cover news: a launch, a milestone, a community initiative, a local success story, or a fresh take on a trending topic. Ask yourself, “Why would a stranger care about this?”
2. Know your target media
Pick 10 to 15 outlets that actually cover your industry and region, including local papers, business portals, niche blogs and regional news sites. Note the reporters who write about topics like yours and read their recent work.
3. Write a sharp press release
Keep it to one page. Put the key news in the first two lines, add a quote from your founder, include one or two facts or numbers, and finish with clear contact details. Skip the jargon and the hype.
4. Pitch personally
Mass emails get ignored. Send a short, personalised note: who you are, the story in two sentences, and why it suits that journalist’s beat. Attach the press release and a few good photos, and follow up once after three to four days.
5. Offer yourself as an expert
Journalists constantly need quotes. Share useful comments on industry trends, and be quick and reliable when they reach out. One good quote can lead to repeat coverage.
6. Use video and visuals
High-quality photos and short videos make your story easier to publish. A 60-second founder clip or event highlight gives editors ready material and often decides whether a story runs.
Don’t forget to amplify
When coverage goes live, share it on social media, add it to your website’s press section, and mention it in your newsletter. Coverage keeps working for you long after publication.
Where to start
Choose one real piece of news this month and pitch it to five relevant journalists. Small, consistent efforts add up faster than one big campaign.
